ABOUT ALTNAHARRA
Altnaharra
is a tiny community on the A836 road in the Northern Highlands, roughly
seventy miles North of Inverness, midway between the larger settlements
of Lairg (South) and Tongue (North). It overlooks the great expanse of Loch
Naver and the second most Northerly Munro, Ben Klibreck.
Just a short drive North-West up the winding single-track road will
take you to Loch Eribol, Durness and ultimately if you want to take the
extra hop on the ferry, Britain's North Westerly tip, known as Cape Wrath.
Driving North towards Tongue you will find Ben Hope and the beautiful Ben
Loyal, a must for avid climbers or casual walkers alike, depending on which
route you take!
One interesting feature of Altnaharra is it has a weather centre which reports
to the UK Met Office. Due to the geography and geology of the settlement
it is prone to extreme conditions, be they cold in the Winter or warm in
the Summer... so if you think you know the name, you probably heard it on
a weather forecast!
